A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby

1. I recommend that you read "A Long Way Down" by Nick Hornby because it is relevant to the subjects that teenagers are interested in and also older people. The book was about four very different people with problems who all decided that they would kill themselves by jumping off a building on New Year's Eve. They all met at the same spot and instead of jumping talked to each other and became almost friends. The people had very different reasons for wanting to die and told their story. Even though it is a sad topic, in some ways it was also funny. No one was crying or anything like that. The stories the people gave were somewhat selfish and somewhat sad, but no one was really judging the reasons for wanting to die. Instead, the book seemed to be about the four people trying to find a reason to live and giving life another chance. No one really thought life would change a lot, but they were willing to live in it anyway. I'm not sure if I really like the book much, but it is interesting to see why people decide to live or die. I cannot relate much to the people in the story, but I think that many teenagers can at least relate to the teen character named Jess.

2. I also recommend that you do NOT read this book. As I said above, I do not relate to the characters' problems at all. I do not think there is any good reason to want to kill myself. However, I think that for those who might struggle with these thoughts, this book would not help them at all. There are no real suggestions given as to why life would be worth living in the plot. No one's problems really go away. It is not a happy book with a happy ending--even though it can be funny in some parts of the story. Also, I think it isn't such a good idea to have so many swear words and bad language to read. It isn't like I don't know about the words or even don't use them myself, I just don't think it is something to promote in a book for school. Although in the end the characters were still alive, it is no a story with a lot of action or really much of a story line except for what the four people were thinking. I like more action than that usually.

So...if you like a book without a lot of action and don't care if it is a happy story or not, and don't mind swearing or reading about depressing topics like suicide, this is the book for you.

Would you rather if this book about suicide had a happy ending? Because i kind of feel that it is more realistic if the ending isnt happy.
Other than the amount of swear words did you like the authors style of writing?

To me I think happy ending makes me feel good and also back of happy ending there was some clue that they might conced suicide again which is realistic.
And i didn't like swear words and also how this book makes me feel i want to die too, so i really don't want to recommend this book. And I liked authors style of writing. It's just good as about a boy...

Did you find that the foul language was used to more strongly portray some of these emotions that were being felt by the characters?

If the book had less swear words and had a happy ending, would you still not recommend this book?
